Common dialup errors/meaning.

Error 676 - The line is busy. This error means that the modem believes the number to be busy. Please ensure that you are dialing the right number. If you are, there is a problem. You should not ever have a busy signal from any number on our network, so contact our support department immediately. Have your account number available.

Error 678 - There is no answer. There are a number of reasons why this error could occur, but you'll usually only encounter 3.

  • The line is not clear enough to acquire a connection. If you do, on occasion, connect, but when then you drop the connection after only a few minutes, this is a very likely culprit. The cause could be a bad wire, a bad jack, bad weather, or issues with the demarcation point (the phone company's box outside the building). Check internal wiring first, then call your phone company if the issue is not found inside. Many users also have an internal wiring agreement with their phone company.
  • You are dialing the wrong number.
  • Your modem and the equipment on the other side aren't able to do their 'handshake' in the allotted time. Often, placing 1-4 commas (,) after the dialup number will resolve this issue. The commas tell the modem to pause before expecting a response, which can often be just long enough to get hear the 'handshake' attempts.
  • If all these check out, dial the dialup number with a normal phone. If you hear modem tones, there is some other problem, either with the modem itself and/or its drivers, or with the software on their computer. Make sure you do not have other software from a former ISP loaded onto the computer. The 'custom drivers' can interfere with a user's dialup connection. If any such software is installed, uninstall it. (Note: AIM and MSN Messenger do not count as such software.)

Error 680 - There is no dial tone. This error means that the modem does not recognize a dial tone.

  • Make sure the phone line is connected to the back of the computer.
  • Check for a dial tone with a normal handset, from the same phone jack the computer is connected to.
  • If you are unable to hear a dial tone, you may have a bad phone jack, bad phone wire, or their local phone service may be down.
  • Restart the PC.
  • If the modem still cannot recognize a dial tone, the modem or its drivers may be bad.

Error 691 - Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain. This is one of the most common errors, and is, thankfully, one of the easiest to diagnose. Generally, a 691 is an authentication issue, meaning someone, somewhere, rejected the user's username and/or password, for some reason.

  • Most commonly, this is due to a simple typo, as in an invalid username or password.
  • You have an empty password.
  • You are over their hourly limit.
  • You have been flagged for network abuse. We enforce 'one-at-a-time' dialup with utmost severity. If the username has had a history of trying to connect from multiple places at once, the username may be flagged for network abuse and will remain unable to dial up.
  • Your username and/or phone number is on a blacklist. We constantly monitor for malicious activity, and blacklist (deny access) to any user who (knowingly or not) participates in such activities. Typically, this is the result of a virus, trying to probe ports or otherwise spread, but on occasion, the user is knowingly participating in detectable malicious activities that break the Terms of Service.

Error 718 - PPP Timeout. This unusual error generally is caused by the failure of the modem to synchronize with the modem on the other side. If you have this problem,

  • Recheck your connection settings. This error can be caused by dialing an incorrect number
  • Restart you PC and attempt to reconnect. This can often resolve a synchronisation problem
  • Recreate the Dial-up Connection.
  • Test the line connectivity by dialing the dialup number directly from a phone handset. If this problem has been ongoing for a long period, an upgrade or repair of the modem drivers may be required. There is a chance that the the modem drivers have corrupted.

Error 721 - Remote PPP peer is not responding. This error, like error 718, is generally caused by the failure of the modem to synchronize with the modem on the other side. If you have this problem,

  • Recheck your connection settings. This error can be caused by dialing an incorrect number
  • Restart you PC and attempt to reconnect. This can often resolve a synchronisation problem
  • Recreate the Dial-up Connection by re-installing our dialup software.
  • Test the line connectivity by dialing the dialup number directly from a phone handset
If this problem has been ongoing for a long period, an upgrade or repair of the modem drivers may be required. There is a chance that the the modem drivers have corrupted.
